Why SEO Services are Scarier Than Tyra Banks

The worlds of modelling and internet marketing are tough, sometimes cut-throat worlds. In both instances a single slip-up can cost you big. But there is something that makes SEO services scarier than even Tyra Banks…

Tyran Banks is one tough lady. Her early career was littered with rejection and discrimination. She was considered to be too ethnic in an industry dominated by tall, thin white women. Her biggest competition was Naomi Campbell who saw Tyra as a threat and would get her fired at every opportunity.

Tyra Banks pioneered the curvy runway model when she refused to starve herself to stay thin and light like the other girls. There were plenty more firsts in Tyra’s career – first black woman on the cover of GQ, first black model featured in the Victoria’s Secret lingerie catalogue among others.

All of this made her tough and seemingly indestructible. Competitors on her show, America’s Top Model feared her scathing comments and sharp wit.

But…

SEO services can be scarier. At least with Tyra Banks you know what you are getting.

There are hundreds, if not thousands of companies in every country purporting to offer top notch SEO services. The problem is that, unlike Tyra Banks, not all of them are as good as they appear at first glance.

For many web design companies, SEO services are a nice “add-on” to the website packages that they sell. It gives them the excuse to up the price and pull clients into a long term contract that guarantees an income for at least 6 months (if not longer) but does not cause too much extra work.

They will send you reports each month showing how well they are doing and how great your rankings are, but in actual fact you would have shown those improvements if your website was left to its own devices.

The keywords that your site appears for will typically be brand related or extremely long tail and specific. The odds are that you will not get that many leads from this kind of traffic. For all you know, the searches and traffic could be coming from the company doing your SEO to begin with.

The end result is that the rest of us who offer SEO services and genuinely know what we are doing and do the actual work get a bad rap. SEO is labelled as useless and a waste of money.

How do I know if I’m getting good SEO?

Good SEO will focus on building your website’s online profile. It will involve writing quality content and posting it on your site. There will be some effort put into building links to your site if your site needs them and those links will be built through legitimate means not automated software or posting to article directories.

Good SEO services will get traffic that results in conversions, whether those conversions take the form of leads or direct sales. The keywords that you rank for will have good demand and be relevant to your industry.

A company that knows what it is doing will never guarantee results and will warn you that it will take a long time for you to see those results. There are no misrepresentations or shortcuts to good SEO services. Of course, good SEO services will work and bad will not. But you won’t know if it has worked until at least 6 months to a year, down the line. And that is really scary, more scary than a Tyra Banks tirade.
